Most landlords and agents in Lahore are honest, but every year some renters lose their deposit to people who never had the right to rent the property. These scams almost always follow the same few patterns, and all of them fall apart if you insist on one thing: see the property and the paperwork before you pay.
Common scams
- The "pay first to book" listing. A great house at a low rent, photos that look perfect, and a request for a token payment to "hold" it before you can visit. After the payment, the number stops answering.
- The fake owner. Someone shows you a real house (sometimes one they are renting themselves, or one they have access to as a caretaker) and collects deposits from several people.
- Copied photos. Pictures lifted from another listing or website, used to advertise a property that doesn't exist or is already rented.
- The "I'm abroad" landlord. The owner says they are overseas and asks you to send money, promising to courier the keys.
- Hidden charges after the deal. Agreed rent suddenly gains "maintenance", "file" or "society" charges that were never mentioned.
Warning signs
- Rent far below similar properties in the same area. Compare with the rent snapshot on our area pages.
- Pressure to decide today because "many people are interested".
- Any request for money before you have visited.
- Payment to a personal account that is not in the owner's name, or to a mobile wallet in someone else's name.
- Reluctance to show a CNIC, ownership papers or a written authority from the owner.
- No written agreement, or an agreement with blanks "to fill later".
A simple checklist before you pay
- Visit the property in person, or send someone you trust.
- Ask to see the owner's CNIC and a document showing ownership, such as the allotment letter or registry. If an agent or relative is renting it out, ask for the owner's written authority.
- Check that the name on recent electricity or gas bills matches the owner, and that the bills are paid.
- Pay the deposit only when the agreement is signed, and by bank transfer to the owner or an authorised agent.
- Keep copies of everything: CNICs, the agreement, receipts and WhatsApp chats.
How RentNest Lahore helps
Every listing is checked by our team before it goes live, listings that several people report are taken offline for review, and every listing page has a Report property button. If something feels wrong, report it and we will look into it. We will never ask you to pay a booking fee to view a property.
If you have already been scammed
Stop sending money, save every message, number and payment receipt, and report it to the police. Online fraud can also be reported to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA), which took over the FIA's cybercrime work. Tell your bank or wallet provider straight away, as they can sometimes hold a transfer.
Frequently asked questions
Should I pay a token amount to book a house before visiting?
No. Visit first and confirm who owns the property. Genuine landlords and agents expect you to see the house before any money changes hands.
How can I check who owns a house in Lahore?
Ask for the owner's CNIC and an ownership document such as the registry or society allotment letter, and compare the name with recent utility bills. If someone else is renting it on the owner's behalf, ask for written authority.
Where do I report a rental scam in Lahore?
Report it to your local police station, and online fraud to the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA). If the listing was on RentNest Lahore, use the Report property button so our team can remove it.
