What is a portion?
A portion is one floor of a house rented separately. The ground floor is a lower portion and the first (or second) floor is an upper portion. You get house-style living, with bedrooms, a kitchen and often a TV lounge, for noticeably less than the rent of a whole house.

Must-check points when renting a portion

- Water tank: shared or separate, and who pays for the motor.
- Whether the landlord's family lives in the other portion, and any house rules.

Do portions have separate electricity and gas meters?
