Hostels and paying guest accommodation in Lahore
Every year thousands of students and working professionals move to Lahore for university or a new job. For most of them, a hostel or paying guest (PG) room is the first home in the city: one monthly charge usually covers the room, furniture, and often meals, laundry, internet and security.
Hostels are normally separate for girls and boys, and many are run in converted houses close to universities, colleges and hospitals. Before paying, read our guide on how to choose a safe hostel in Lahore.
Popular areas for hostels
- Johar Town: near several private universities, Expo Centre and Jinnah Hospital; one of the largest hostel clusters in the city.
- Muslim Town, Garden Town and Allama Iqbal Town: close to Punjab University's New Campus and the Canal Road.
- Model Town and Faisal Town: quieter residential streets with easy access to Ferozepur Road.
- Gulberg: preferred by working professionals because of its offices, banks and shopping areas.
What the monthly charge usually includes
- Room on a sharing basis (2 to 4 people) or a single room at a higher rate
- Bed, mattress, cupboard and study table
- Meals, often two or three a day (ask about the menu and timings)
- Electricity, water and Wi-Fi, though AC or heater use is sometimes charged separately
- Laundry, cleaning and a security guard or CCTV
Checks before you book
- Visit in person (or send a family member) and see the actual room, washrooms and kitchen.
- Ask about security: guard, CCTV, entry timings, visitor rules and who holds keys.
- Confirm what is included and what is extra, such as AC, UPS backup or weekend meals.
- Ask for a written receipt for every payment and clear refund rules for the security deposit.
- For girls' hostels, ask whether a female warden lives on site.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a hostel and paying guest (PG)?
The terms are used loosely in Lahore. A hostel is usually a dedicated building with many residents and a warden, while PG often means a few rooms in a family home or small house. Both normally include furniture and utilities in one monthly charge.
Is a security deposit charged for hostels?
Most hostels charge a refundable security deposit, commonly equal to one month's charge, plus the first month in advance. Ask for a receipt and the refund conditions in writing.
Are meals included in hostel charges?
Many hostels include two or three meals a day, while others charge for meals separately. Ask for the weekly menu and meal timings before you book.
Are hostels in Lahore safe for girls?
Many girls' hostels have a female warden, CCTV, guards and strict entry timings. Visit before booking, speak to current residents if you can, and make sure the hostel is registered with the local police where required.
