For many students and young professionals, a hostel or paying guest (PG) room is their first home in Lahore. A good one gives you a safe place, decent food and a quiet space to study or rest. A bad one can mean poor security, surprise charges and a deposit you never see again. Here's how to choose well.
Hostel, PG or a shared room?
- Hostel: a building with many residents, a warden, fixed rules and usually meals. Easiest for first-year students and parents who want structure.
- Paying guest (PG): a few rooms in a family home or small house, often with home-cooked food. Quieter and more personal.
- Shared [room](/rent/rooms/) or flat: more freedom and often cheaper per person, but you manage bills, cooking and cleaning yourself.
Choose the area around your daily commute
Lahore traffic makes distance expensive in time and fares. Pick a hostel close to your university or office, or on a direct route along the Canal Road or the Metro bus line.
- Punjab University (New Campus): Muslim Town, Garden Town, Allama Iqbal Town and Johar Town.
- Private universities in Johar Town and nearby: Johar Town, Wapda Town and Township.
- LUMS and DHA-based offices: DHA Lahore and Cantt.
- Gulberg offices, banks and colleges: Gulberg and Model Town.
What to ask about money
- Monthly charge per bed, for a single room and for 2, 3 or 4-person sharing
- Security deposit amount and refund rules in writing
- Is the first month payable in advance?
- What is included: meals, electricity, AC/heater use, UPS backup, Wi-Fi, laundry
- Extra charges for AC in summer, guests or late meals
- Charges if you leave mid-semester, and the notice period
Safety checklist (especially for girls' hostels)
- Visit in person, with a family member if possible, and see the actual room, not just photos.
- Security guard, CCTV at entrances and a controlled gate
- A resident female warden in girls' hostels
- Clear entry and exit timings and a visitor policy
- Fire safety: more than one exit, working extinguishers, safe wiring
- The hostel should register residents with the police. Ask about tenant registration
- Talk to one or two current residents when the owner isn't around
Red flags
- Asking for money before you've seen the hostel
- No receipts, or refusing to put the deposit terms in writing
- Many more beds in a room than advertised
- No warden, guard or working locks
- Pressure to decide immediately "because the last bed is going"

Frequently asked questions
Which area is best for a hostel in Lahore?
The best area is the one closest to your university or office. Johar Town, Muslim Town, Garden Town and Allama Iqbal Town are popular with students; Gulberg and Model Town with working professionals.
What should a hostel's monthly charge include?
Usually the bed and furniture, electricity and water, Wi-Fi and often meals and laundry. AC use, UPS backup and weekend meals are sometimes extra, so confirm before booking.
Is a written agreement needed for a hostel?
Ask for at least a written receipt that states the monthly charge, the deposit and the refund rules. A short written agreement is better.
