In most Lahore rentals the tenant pays the electricity and gas bills, but the connections stay in the owner's name. That makes bills a common source of disputes: old arrears, shared meters, and who pays the last bill. A few minutes of checking before you move in avoids all of that.

How to check a LESCO bill online

  1. Find the reference number on a recent LESCO bill. It is printed near the top of the bill (14 digits).
  2. Open the bill-check page on LESCO's official website (lesco.gov.pk).
  3. Enter the reference number to see the current bill, due date, units consumed and any arrears.
  4. Download or print the duplicate bill if you need to pay it at a bank, through mobile banking or a wallet app.

Only enter your reference number on official LESCO/PITC pages or your bank's app. Be careful with unofficial websites and anyone asking for payment to a personal account to "clear" a bill.

How to check an SNGPL gas bill

SNGPL bills have a consumer number (11 digits) printed on the bill. Enter it on the bill-check page of SNGPL's official website (sngpl.com.pk) to see the current bill and any outstanding amount.

Before you move in

  • Ask the landlord for the last two or three months' paid bills for electricity and gas, and check them online with the reference/consumer numbers.
  • Make sure there are no arrears. Old dues should be cleared by the landlord before you take possession. Write this into the rent agreement.
  • For a portion, confirm your portion has its own separate meters. Shared meters lead to arguments every month.
  • Take a clear, dated photo of each meter reading on the day you get the keys, and send it to the landlord on WhatsApp.
  • Ask whether the connection is residential, because a commercial tariff costs more.

While you live there

  • Pay before the due date. Late-payment surcharges add up quickly.
  • Keep payment receipts or screenshots; your landlord may ask for them.
  • Summer bills in Lahore can be several times higher than winter bills because of AC use. Budget for it when you compare rents.

When you move out

  1. Take a final meter reading photo on the day you hand over the keys.
  2. Agree with the landlord how the last partial bill will be split: paid by you when it arrives, or adjusted from the security deposit.
  3. Get the settlement confirmed in writing so the deposit can be returned without delay.

Frequently asked questions

Who pays electricity and gas bills in a rented house in Lahore?

Usually the tenant, while the connection stays in the owner's name. The rent agreement should say this clearly, along with who pays society maintenance and water charges.

Do I need to transfer the LESCO connection to my name as a tenant?

Normally no. Tenants pay the bills on the owner's connection. What matters is that there are no arrears when you move in and that final bills are settled when you leave.

What if the previous tenant left unpaid bills?

Ask the landlord to clear all arrears before you take possession and write it into the agreement. Check the bill online with the reference number before paying any advance.
