For many people, especially anyone working from home, good internet is now as important as water and electricity. The catch is that availability in Lahore varies street by street, so the best time to check is before you sign the rent agreement, not after you move in.
Check before you rent
- Ask the landlord which internet connection the previous tenant used, and whether the cabling is still in place.
- Ask a neighbour or the building guard which providers work well in that street or building.
- Look for fibre boxes on nearby poles or in the building's electrical room.
- Test mobile signal inside the house. You will want it as a backup.
- For flats, ask the building management which providers already have fibre in the building.
Types of connection
- Fibre to the home: the fastest and most stable option where available. Several providers, including PTCL's Flash Fiber, StormFiber, Wateen and Worldcall, offer fibre in parts of Lahore, but coverage differs from area to area.
- Other wired broadband: older copper or cable-based connections are still common and can be fine for lighter use.
- 4G devices and mobile data: quick to set up and portable, useful as a backup or for a short stay, but speeds vary with signal and network load.
Questions to ask a provider
- Is service actually available at this exact address, and when can it be installed?
- What are the installation charges and the router or device cost? Is the router yours or rented?
- Is there a minimum contract period or a fee for disconnecting early?
- What happens during load-shedding? You may need a small UPS for the router.
- Can the connection be shifted to a new address when you move, and what does that cost?
Ask the landlord too
- Can the installer run a cable through walls or drill holes, and where?
- Is there space for the router where the signal will reach the whole house? Larger houses may need a mesh system or a second access point.
- Put any agreement about cabling in writing so there is no dispute about holes or cables at move-out.
When you move out
Tell your provider well before your last day. Return any rented equipment and get a receipt, settle the final bill, and either disconnect or ask for the connection to be shifted to your new home.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check internet availability before renting in Lahore?
Ask the landlord and neighbours which providers work in that street, look for fibre boxes nearby, and confirm availability with providers using the exact address before you sign.
Can a tenant get a fibre connection in a rented house?
Yes. The connection is usually in the tenant's name. Agree with the landlord where cables can run before installation.
What happens to my internet connection when I move?
Tell the provider in advance. You can usually either disconnect, after settling the final bill and returning rented equipment, or ask for the connection to be shifted to your new address.
