Renting Out Your Lahore Property While Living Abroad
For overseas Pakistanis: how to rent out a house or flat in Lahore when you live abroad, from appointing someone you trust to collecting rent and avoiding the most common problems.

Many houses and flats in Lahore belong to families living in the Gulf, the UK, Europe or North America. Renting them out makes sense, since an empty house deteriorates and can attract trouble, but managing a tenant from thousands of kilometres away needs a bit more planning.
1. Decide who will manage it for you
Someone has to show the property, meet tenants, sign the agreement, handle repairs and deal with any problems. Usually it is one of these:
- A relative or close friend in Lahore. Cheapest, but make sure they actually have the time and are comfortable dealing with tenants.
- A property dealer or management company. They charge a fee, but it's their job. Agree in writing what they handle and what they charge.
2. Give them proper authority
If someone else will sign the rent agreement on your behalf, they will normally need a power of attorney or written authority from you. Pakistan's embassies and consulates can attest such documents for overseas Pakistanis. Keep the authority limited to what's needed, for example renting and managing the property, and not selling it.
A power of attorney that allows sale of the property is a serious risk. For renting, a limited authority is usually enough. Speak to a lawyer about the right wording.
3. Set up rent payments you can see
- Ask the tenant to pay rent directly into your own bank account by transfer, not in cash to the caretaker.
- Put the account details in the rent agreement.
- Check your statement every month. Problems are much easier to fix in month two than in month eight.
4. Keep a copy of everything
- The signed rent agreement and the tenant's CNIC copies
- The police tenant registration slip
- Move-in photos and meter readings
- Monthly utility bills, which your manager can send on WhatsApp
5. Plan for repairs and visits
Keep a small budget with your manager for routine repairs so small problems don't grow. Ask for photos after any repair, and arrange a proper inspection at least once or twice a year. If you visit Pakistan, go and see the property yourself.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Letting a caretaker collect rent in cash with no records.
- Renting without a written agreement or police registration.
- Giving someone a broad power of attorney that goes beyond renting.
- Leaving the property empty for years. An occupied, well-kept house is usually safer than a locked one.
